Construction:
The scanner was basically constructed with a plastic case, with plastic
and rubber buttons. This radio is very easy to use but hard to read the display
if your not looking straight down over the radio.
Performance:
At the time I really had nothing to compare it to. It's a good
beginning radio for someone in an area that doesn't have but just a few
frequencies to monitor. Reception was poor compared to my other radios
I have now. The sound seemed week and needed help. Too much high
end sounds and nothing in the middle or low end. Sometimes it was
real hard to understand what was being said.
My 2 cents:
This was my first scanner I have ever bought (1991-92?). I brought
it home, programmed some frequencies and I was happy. Since I had
never had any scanners before this, I had nothing to compare it too.
It seemed to do everything I needed at the time until I started finding
more frequencies to program with no room to do it. This happened
about a week after I had it. When my son was 1 years
old, he ripped the antenna off the back and spilt a can of pop on it and
it still worked. The antenna needed re-sodered inside to the board
and some of the buttons stuck a little bit but after taking it apart and
cleaning them, it was fine. I kept this radio for about 6 months
before upgrading to the BC210XLT which had double the channels and the
reception and sound was much more improved. The 172xl was a great new beginners
radio but I quickly out grew it in just a couple months.
Today I wouldn't pay more then 25 bucks for this radio used or new,
I paid 139 bucks for it new in 1992???..
